Liam Viney and Anna Grinberg

Liam Viney and Anna Grinberg have collaborated as duo pianists for over a decade in festivals, radio broadcasts and concert series in Australia, the United States and Israel. After forming their musical partnership at Yale University, they spent a decade in the United States before becoming Ensemble in Residence at the University of Queensland in 2009. Described in 2012 by The Australian as "barnstorming,' their 2011 recital at "Piano Spheres", Los Angeles, was described by Los Angeles Times critic Rick Schultz as "sure to be on the Best of 2011 list.'. Anna and Liam have appeared together as soloists with Queensland Symphony Orchestra, were featured pianists at the 2010 Bangalow Music Festival, the 2011 Tyalgum Festival, the 2013 Canberra International Music Festival, Los Angeles' Jacaranda Series, Yale University's Messiaen Centenary Celebration, and have made live broadcasts on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's "Classic FM" Sunday Live program and the ABC’s Keys to Music program with Graham Abbott. They accompanied the great ballerina Nina Ananiashvili’s solo appearance at Royce Hall with the State Ballet of Georgia during her 2008 tour of the United States. Critic Ivan Katz said of their duo playing at the Horowitz Series, Yale University: “I cannot imagine a finer performance, as this one had everything, illuminating every bar of the music…The audience went wild…”

The Duo is committed to developing a unique repertoire based on exploring classics of the two-piano literature, as well as creating new works through commissions. They have commissioned over ten new works for two pianos and piano duets, from major composers such as Matthew Hindson, Andrew Ford, Martin Bresnick,  Kate Neal, Stuart Greenbaum, Gordon Hamilton, Shaun Naidoo, Marc Lowenstein, Ezra Ladermann and Yevgeniy Sharlat. In 2010 they gave the world premiere of Stephen Leek’s Warrumbungles Burning for two pianos and choir with the St. Peter’s Chorale, and released a CD of two-piano and choir works by Leek, Jonathan Dove and Mary Ellen Childs. In 2011 and 2012 they gave complete performances of George Crumb's 4-volume Makrokosmos

Both Anna and Liam have Doctorates in piano performance, from Stony Brook University and Yale University respectively. Anna has served on the music faculties of Yale and Chapman University, and both of them taught at the California Institute of the Arts. Anna and Liam are now based at the piano department of the University of Queensland, School of Music.
